Larry H. Miller Nissan Mesa - National Safety Month

The month of June is National Safety Month!
Here at Larry H. Miller Nissan Mesa, we wanted to share some advice on vehicle safety and how we can help!

The key to improving vehicle safety is through tire awareness and maintenance. Here at Larry H. Miller Nissan Mesa, we want to do our part in making sure you are educated in both. We offer videos, specials, and discounts on tire rotations, safety inspections, and tire pressure. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that approximately 9% of crashes are tire-related in some way.

In order to avoid tire-related crashes, it is important that you check tire pressure, tread depth, rotate tires, adjust, and avoid potholes. RightTurn blog described it perfectly below:

The acronym PART can help you remember to perform your routine tire maintenance. There are 4 major components in PART:
  • P – Pressure
  • A – Alignment
  • R – Rotation
  • T – Tread
Tire Pressure- Here at Larry H. Miller Nissan Mesa, we put together a YouTube video of the low tire pressure warning light and what causes it. You should check your tire pressure regularly.

Tire Alignment- In the month of June, Larry H. Miller Nissan Mesa is offering a Special on a 4 Wheel Alignment. For full details on this special, click HERE

Tire Rotation- We recommend that you rotate your tires every 5,000-8,000 miles.

Tire Tread- TireRack.com describes Tread Depth below:

Tread depth is a vertical measurement between the top of the tread rubber to the bottom of the tire's deepest grooves. In the United States, tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. Because it is difficult to accurately measure tread depth with a ruler, tread depth is best measured with a tire tread depth gauge. When tires have neared the end of their life, a U.S. Lincoln penny can also be used to confirm the tire's tread depth. If Lincoln's entire head is visible, the tire is worn to approximately 2/32" and is considered legally worn out in most States.

Here at Larry H. Miller Nissan Mesa, we are offering a Complimentary 27-Point Vehicle Safety Inspection along with a Car Wash with any service visit! We want to make sure that no matter where your vehicle takes you, you are safe! For more information on this special and other current specials, click HERE.

Car Seat Changes for LATCH System Limits

We know that you take your safety seriously and we wanted to share some car seat changes that will be impacting families starting in February.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has outline car seat changes regarding the weight-limit on the LATCH system in cars and trucks.

Before this change, weight-limits and car seat guidelines were based on the height and weight of a child passenger. These new limits would set parameters around the LATCH system and the combined weight of the child and the car seat.

This presents some challenges for parents with the actual weight of the car seat, and in the case of infant car seats, the anchor, varying between brands.

The NHTSA is setting the new combined weight limit (car seat + child) for LATCH systems at 65 pounds.

Once they’ve reached that weight, parents will need to move children into a car seat or booster seat that utilizes the seatbelt restraint system in the vehicle.

The last big change to car seat recommendations came in 2011 from the American Academy of Pediatrics when it was recommended that children remain in rear-facing car seats until the age of two, rather than transition to forward-facing seats at one year of age.

For more details on this change, visit the following links:

You can see info specific to Nissan vehicles regarding LATCH positions in the booklet from SafeCar.gov

If you have questions about your LATCH system, please visit any our Service Department for assistance.

Be safe!

Low Tire Pressure Warning Light

One of the more commonly asked questions we get here in our service department is about a little light on the dash. If you aren't familiar with this light, it can look pretty ominous. Don't worry, it is only the Low Tire Pressure Warning Light. Tire pressure is an important piece of the performance puzzle and if you don't pay attention to it you can have some serious consequences.

"If tire pressure is too high, then less of the tire touches the ground. As a consequence, your car will bounce around on the road. And when your tires are bouncing instead of firmly planted on the road, traction suffers and so do your stopping distances. You'll also feel a decrease in ride comfort. (Hint: If you notice that every tie you own has coffee on it, check your tire pressure. It may be too high.)If tire pressure is too low, then too much of the tire's surface area touches the ground, which increases friction between the road and the tire. As a result, not only will your tires wear prematurely, but they also could overheat. Overheating can lead to tread separation — and a nasty accident. One sign of low tire pressure is if your tires squeal when cornering. And you need to check your tire pressure even if your tires aren't leaking. Why? Because tire pressure also changes with the temperature outside. Tire pressure decreases by about 1 pound per square inch for every 10-degree drop in outside air temperature. So if you last had your tire pressure checked in July, when it was 80 degrees outside, and it's now January — and the temperature is minus 20 — your tires may be underinflated by 10 pounds, which is dangerous." - CarTalk.com
